The vote in Snohomish County during the Nov. 6 Washington gubernatorial contest demonstrates a couple of things.

First, this place isn't King County, where governor-elect Jay Inslee, the Democratic candidate, got roughly two votes for every one that went to Republican Rob McKenna. In Snohomish County, McKenna was victorious in about half of the county's cities and towns and much of the unincorporated area east and north of Everett. With most of the numbers crunched, he trailed Inslee by less than 2 percent, or roughly 5,500 votes out of nearly 300,000 counted.

But where Inslee did well explains his victory. As the data we mapped demonstrate, the governor elect carried this county because he snagged the most votes in the places where the most people live, from Everett south to the county line.

Look at the attached map. That band of blue running through the county's southwest quarter is the local equivalent of Florida, Texas and California combined. Getting the south county vote often carries the day for Democrats in local elections -- no matter how much of the rest of the map fills up with red.

That said, McKenna clearly had a lot of support here, much of it deep. He won in 344 of the county's 756 precincts and tied Inslee in at least a dozen more. Contrast that result with GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who carried 134 precincts, data show.

You can see how the votes broke for Inslee and McKenna in the table below. Meanwhile, you can check out how your neighborhood voted in the gubernatorial race, the presidential contest, and the votes on gay marriage and legalizing pot by searching the database we prepared here:

Note: Data is available for all but a handful of the county's 756 precincts. The county holds back results in some small precincts to protect voter privacy. Data provided by the Snohomish County auditor's office.
