Democrat Suzan DelBene, of Medina, was sworn in Tuesday as the new representative of Washington’s 1st Congressional District.
DelBene will complete the term of Democrat Gov.-elect Jay Inslee, who resigned from Congress earlier this year. She also will serve a full two-year term starting in January.
DelBene defeated Republican John Koster of Arlington for the short- and full-terms in this month’s election. She will be working out of Inslee’s former quarters in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.
Reps. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., and Doc Hastings, R-Wash., spoke briefly after DelBene took the oath shortly after 4 p.m. PST.
“It is a great privilege to represent the people of Washington’s 1st Congressional District, both the current and future versions of it,” she said in brief remarks. “I’ll work very, very hard to serve them well.”
The 1st Congressional District encompasses parts of Snohomish, King, Skagit and Whatcom counties, including the cities of Bothell, Mill Creek, Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Granite Falls and Sultan.
