SPOKANE -- Spokane County will no longer prosecute adults for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana.

Spokane prosecutors join prosecutors in King, Pierce and Clark counties who are changing policies after voters approved Initiative 502, the marijuana legalization law that takes effect Dec. 6.

Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Jack Driscoll told The Spokesman-Review the change will have minimal effect. Spokane County currently has one possession case that falls under the new guidelines. Five cases involving people younger than 21 still will be prosecuted. And another nine marijuana possession cases involve people charged with other crimes.
