SEATTLE — The members of the University of Washington men’s basketball team boarded a bus destined for SeaTac Airport on Thursday afternoon, and senior Scott Suggs was among the players settling into a seat.
Whether or not the 6-foot-6 swingman will be on the court when the Huskies begin play in the Hall of Fame Tournament this weekend in Uncasville, Conn., is still to be determined, however.
The concussion that Suggs suffered early in Tuesday night’s loss to Albany might keep him out of action for one game, possibly two, when UW gets back on the court this weekend, starting Saturday against Seton Hall.
“I want to play, but I’m not sure if I will or not,” Suggs said early Tuesday afternoon, before boarding the bus. “It just depends on what the doctors say.”
Coach Lorenzo Romar described Suggs as “day-to-day” and said that the senior guard will have to pass some concussion tests before he’s cleared to play Saturday. He added that a long, cross-country flight could affect Suggs, who had to be helped off the court two minutes into Tuesday’s game.
Suggs suffered the injury while running back on defense. Albany point guard Michael Black inadvertently elbowed him in the head when throwing his hands up for a pass, then another Albany player accidentally kneed Suggs in the back of the head as he tried to get up off the floor.
Suggs said he remembered little of the incident Thursday, other than being helped off the court by trainers.
“I’m doing a lot better today,” he said Thursday afternoon. “(On Wednesday,) I was pretty tired. I’m feeling a lot better today.”
Romar said that freshman combo guard Andrew Andrews would start on Saturday if Suggs isn’t cleared to play. Andrews played 36 minutes and scored nine points in Tuesday night’s loss.
Welcome aboard
While all but promising that this week’s signings are not yet complete, Romar officially welcomed 6-foot-5 swingman Darin Johnson of Sacramento as his first recruit of the Class of 2013.
Johnson signed with the team late Wednesday night and is officially part of a team that reportedly expects to add point guard Nigel Williams-Goss of Las Vegas in the coming days.
When asked if he expected Johnson to contribute to the program next year, Romar said: “He better contribute next year, or we recruited the wrong guy. I expect him to come in and make a contribution as a freshman.”
