Front Porch: Expect congestion on I-5 near Seattle this weekend

Expect I-5 congestion

If you’re driving south on I-5 this weekend, better add time to your commute. The state Department of Transportation plans to close Highway 520 over the weekend between Montlake Boulevard and I-405. Crews are to install girders at Bellevue Way for the highway’s carpool lane project.

The department notes that the Sounders playoff match at 6 p.m. Sunday at CenturyLink Field will likely add to the congestion.

Drivers also should be aware that one lane in each direction of the Montlake Bridge in Seattle will close for maintenance from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Drivers can expect the most congestion on the Montlake Bridge between 9 and 11:30 a.m.

Pancakes for Sandy relief: Ebenezer Lutheran Church’s Norwegian pancake breakfast is to be held from 7:30 to 10:30 Saturday morning. It will benefit relief efforts on the East Coast for those affected by superstorm Sandy.

The thin, rolled pancakes will be dished up with strawberries, syrup and a side of sliced ham, along with breakfast beverages, for $5. Children under age 4 eat free.

The church is at 2111 117th Ave. NE in Lake Stevens. Proceeds will be directed to relief efforts of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Discounted helmets: Discounted winter sports helmets are for sale at the Marysville Fire District.

The helmets are designed to prevent head injuries when skiing, snowboarding and tubing, Marysville Fire Marshal Tom Maloney said.

The helmets fit children and most adults. They are $25 each and have lined padding and ear covers. The helmets are provided through a partnership between the fire district and Safe Kids Snohomish County. Neither organization profits from the sales. Fittings are free.
