Scouting report on Eastside Catholic
How it got here: Eastside Catholic blocked a punt returned an interception for a touchdown and four of quarterback Trey Reynolds’ five completed passes went for touchdowns as the Crusaders rolled to a 69-13 victory over Kelso in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
Player to watch: Trey Reynolds, QB. Reynolds is the definition of a dual-threat quarterback. He doesn’t throw the ball a ton, but when he does he is very effective and he is always a threat to take off and run. Marysville could have their hands full with Reynolds as they haven’t faced many quarterbacks like him this season.
Biggest win: Eastside Catholic 50, Hale 8. Hale went undefeated in the Metro Sound league, but the Crusaders handled the Raiders easily in the Metro league championship game. Eastside Catholic scores a lot of points, but also has a reputation for giving up a lot of points this season. Against the Raiders they both scored points and shut down the Hale offense.
Key to the game: Eastside Catholic is certainly the most complete team that the Tomahawks have faced all season. Marysville Pilchuck coach Brandon Carson said he has looked for a weakness and just can’t find one. That said, the Crusaders will give up points and so far in the playoffs Marysville hasn’t had a problem scoring them. Austin Joyner and Kacey Walker will do what they do every week. The key for the Tomahawks offensively will be for quarterback Jake Luton to make his throws when called upon. But in order for the Tomahawks to win this football game, the defense will have to play the way it has against Timberline and Mountain View. If Eastside Catholic scores over 40 points, the Tomahawks will be in trouble.
Pick: Marysville Pilchuck 35, Eastside Catholic 28
