$700K in damage from Monroe storage facility fire

MONROE -- A three-alarm fire that broke out at a Monroe storage facility last week is estimated to have caused $700,000 in damage.
The fire broke out about 1 a.m. Thursday at Chain Lake Self Storage, a sprawling stretch of sheet-metal buildings north of U.S. 2 along Chain Lake Road.
More than 60 firefighters from 11 fire departments fought the fire for more than 10 hours. The facility was protected with a fire alarm system but was not equipped with fire sprinklers. Fifty-five of the more than 500 storage units were destroyed and 130 were damaged by the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, according to Monroe Fire Marshal Michael Fitzgerald. It is expected to be several weeks before additional information is available.
