Marysville teacher receives award

Marysville Arts and Technology High School teacher Aleesha Paddleford recently received The Evergreen State College 2012 Teacher Excellence Award.

The award honors teachers who have had a significant impact on the lives of their students.

Paddleford, who teaches history and theater design, was nominated by former student, Kristie Opel.

Everett schools earn Boeing grant

The Everett Public Schools Foundation recently received a $26,000 grant from Boeing to help support a science, technology, engineering and mathematics initiative.

Everett Public Schools has embarked on a STEM Initiative to provide all students with high quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics instruction from kindergarten to graduation.

The award will help pay for a program review of the district’s career and technical education, science and mathematics programs. The goal of the review, which began in October, is to gather a baseline the district can use to create a three- to five-year strategic plan to transform what are now three separate departments into a STEM team.

Firefighters honor Granite Falls students

Students at Mountain Way and Monte Cristo Elementary schools receive special recognition from the local fire department when they are selected as the Principal’s Award Winner.

As part of the award, local firefighters from Snohomish County Fire District 17 come to the schools to give a private tour of one of the fire trucks and talk to the students about the importance of education.

The first award winners, Andrew Christensen, a third-grader from Mountain Way Elementary, and Trey Carter, a fourth-grader at Monte Cristo Elementary, were selected in October. The program continues through May.

Students are selected for the award for academic achievement, steady improvement, outstanding behavior or other successes in the classroom. One student from each school will be randomly selected each month from the pool of principal award winners for the fire department recognition.

Monroe student earns champion title

A seventh-grader at Hidden River Middle School in Monroe recently earned the title of World Champion Junior Hunt Rider in the Morgan Grand Nationals and World Championships.

Linel Mullendore, 11, also finished 10th out of 42 riders in the American Morgan Horse Association Hunt Seat Gold Medal Finals class. The event was held in October in Oklahoma City.

The horse that Linel rode in the championships is a 17-year-old mare named Brookhaven Whaminatcha. Nicknamed Costly, the mare has won numerous championships with her owner, Judy Holden of Snohomish. The horse is trained by Linel’s mother, Ginger Mullendore of Monroe.

Students raise money for cancer research

Arlington High School marketing essentials students recently raised $1,100 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer research program.

Students in the class are involved in a competition between teams that is structured after the popular TV program, “Celebrity Apprentice.” In this competition, students were instructed to create a marketing plan utilizing any promotion that they felt would assist them in achieving their goal.

Their goal was to sell as much lemonade as possible during lunchtime over the course of three days. The winning team included Michael Cartwright, Kailey Turek, Sarai Munoz, Jessie Landis, Keyton Holcomb, Natalie Mackey, JJ Haldeman, Aman, Everisto, Tyler Kokulak, Jessi Sobzcuk, Mario Flores, Danielle Baker, Madison Terhaar, Rochelle Berg and Sarah Shortt.
