A Snohomish County Sheriff patrol car rests upside down against a tree at a private residence directly across Fourth Avenue W. from Mariner High School in south Everett late Monday afternoon following an incident involving a high-speed chase. The deputy is in Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries.

EVERETT -- A Snohomish County sheriff's deputy was seriously injured Monday afternoon when his patrol car rolled over near Mariner High School south of Everett. The deputy had just made a U-turn to follow a silver BMW that was being driven recklessly, sheriff's spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. The deputy lost control, and his car flipped. It happened about 4:30 p.m. along Fourth Ave W., in front of the high school, Ireton said. The BMW crashed shortly after the deputy did, and the driver ran off. Police were searching for him but had not located him as of early Monday evening. Firefighters cut the deputy from the patrol car and took him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The deputy, a 12-year law enforcement veteran, is expected to survive. The man who was driving the BMW was described as black and wearing a green beanie-style cap. Police believe the BMW had been stolen. Initial reports were that the BMW had crashed into the patrol car and the driver and a passenger ran away, but that didn't appear to be the case, Ireton said. Additional details weren't immediately available. Rikki King: 425-339-3449, rking@heraldnet.com
