EVERETT -- Police say an Everett man caught a burglar in his detached garage early Monday and fired a shot in a confrontation.

The bullet hit a neighbor's van and the burglar ran off.

Police searched with a tracking dog but were unable to find the man.

The incident occurred just after midnight in the 1700 block of Cedar Street, Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell said.

A 62-year-old man told police he heard a noise in his garage and went to check. He found a man inside.

There was a "verbal interaction" between the two, followed by the homeowner firing a shot, Snell said. It is unclear if the suspect was injured. The bullet struck a neighbor's van.

The suspect is described as white and about 5 feet, 9 inches tall. He had a goatee and was wearing a green "hoodie" sweatshirt.

Police urged anyone with information on the incident to call 911 or the Everett Police Department tip line at 425-257-8450.
