KENT — The Everett Silvertips mounted a comeback, but in the end they put themselves into too big a hole.
Everett couldn’t recover from a disastrous first period, and the Tips fell 5-3 to the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday night.
Roberts Lipsbergs scored a hat trick, including both goals in the first period, as the T-birds dominated through the first 25 minutes and built a 3-0 lead. Everett fought back in the second to tie it up at 3-3, but it was Lipsbergs who again broke the tie, this time early in the third.
Jesse Forsberg and Justin Hickman also scored for Seattle (12-12-1-0), while Brandon Glover earned the win in goal with 20 saves.
Kohl Bauml, Joshua Winquist and Carson Stadnyk scored, while Reid Petryk had three assists for Everett (10-17-0-2). Daniel Cotton made 33 saves in net for the Tips.
Everett was looking for a quick bounce back following Sunday’s 8-2 home loss to Kelowna, but instead the Tips found themselves behind 2-0 less than six minutes into the game. Lipsbergs scored his first at 3:24, redirecting Connor Honey’s shot past Cotton. Then Lipsbergs made it 2-0 on the power play at 5:36, putting home a rebound. The T-birds ended up outshooting Everett 19-3 in the period.
It seemed a lost night for Everett when Forsberg’s wrister got through Cotton while short-handed at 4:21 of the second, giving the T-birds a 3-0 lead.
But Everett came storming back during the second half of the second period. Bauml began it by converting a nice feed from Petryk while short-handed at 10:21. The Tips pulled within one on the power play at 15:38 when Winquist put in a rebound. Then Stadnyk tied it at 17:22, scoring on a rebound of his own to knot it at 3-3.
However, it all proved for naught for the Tips. Lipsbergs took advantage of a bad turnover by Dawson Leedahl to give the T-birds the lead again 1:56 into the third period. Hickman added insurance at 15:21, scoring shortly after coming out of the penalty box.
