Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics has selected Steven Globerman as the 2012 Distinguished Research Fellow. Globerman is the Kaiser professor of international business and director of the Center for International Business. He was also named professor of the year by MBA students.

Professional organizer Monika Kristofferson of Lake Stevens-based Efficient Organization recently celebrated six years in the business. Kristofferson also furthered her training and became a GO System business productivity consultant. Efficient Organization offers hands-on organizing as well as seminars and productivity training.

Good deeds

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District Lodge 751 announced that it has raised nearly $299,000 for Guide Dogs of America in 2012. District President Tom Wroblewski was presented with a 2012 Gift of Sight award recognizing his efforts on behalf of the organization. Over the past four years, District 751 has raised more than $1 million for Guide Dogs of America.

Annie’s Community Kitchen at Edmonds Lutheran Church, QFC of west Lynnwood and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are sponsoring a giving tree in the floral department of the QFC store. It is decked with wish lists of children and families in need. Shoppers or community members can take a name from the tree and purchase a gift. The organizations will handle delivery.

Kudos

Seattle Business magazine has honored Monroe’s Spencer Cabinetry as one of the Washington Green 50 — outstanding companies in the state leading the way in ecological sustainability. Spencer Cabinetry’s development of new products made from its manufacturing waste was a major factor in the selection.

Sedro-Woolley’s Janicki Industries, a manufacturer of composites used in aerospace and other industries, was named the 2012 Manufacturer of the Year by the Association of Washington Business. Among others recognized were HPF Manufacturing of Snohomish.

Edmonds author Robbie Holz has been honored with another book award for “Journey to the Heart: Secrets of Aboriginal Healing,” which was co-written by her late husband, Dr. Gary Holz. The book won the 2012 USA Best Book Award and is a finalist in the Multicultural Non-Fiction category by USA Book News. It also won the 2012 Nautilus Silver Medal and was a finalist for the Foreword Review 2011 Book of the Year.

Events

Sterling Gurney, a local financial advisor for Edward Jones, invites the community to attend a holiday open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at 602 2nd St., Suite C, in Snohomish. Appetizers will be served. Gurney is also supporting the Snohomish Food Bank by using his office as a drop-off location.

SCYPN, a young professionals network that helps build connections for the leaders of tomorrow, will celebrate SCYPN Night at the Tips to cheer on the Everett Silvertips hockey team. The event is Friday. Discounted tickets are available to SCYPN attendees for $15. Go to the SCYPN Facebook page for more information.

We Do Art, a contemporary shop celebrating local artists and crafts people, will hold its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The store is at 5612 Evergreen Way in Everett. Wine tasting will be featured. For more information, go online at www.wedoart.net.

Workforce Development Council Snohomish County, in partnership with WorkSource Snohomish County, will host a free seminar on the advantages of employers hiring veterans from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Everett Station Weyerhaeuser Room at 3201 Smith Ave. in Everett. All Things HR of Lynnwood will host the next HR 101 webinar, on annual performance reviews, from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Workforce Development Council Snohomish County is soliciting proposals from public relations firms and specialists to provide public relations and communications services for the council. Café Zippy, a local café well-known among Trinity Lutheran College and Everett Community College students, will remain open until midnight Dec. 10 through Dec. 12 to welcome students and faculty during finals week. It is at 2811 Wetmore Ave.

Refresh Boutique, a family-owned resale boutique and fashion lounge on Wetmore Avenue in Everett, celebrated a holiday party with the public Saturday. Hair and makeup experts offerrd complimentary style consultations. The family’s 103-year-old grandmother displayed and sold her handmade jewelry.

The Austin, a new steakhouse with live entertainment, has opened in downtown Everett at the Oakes Avenue and California Street. According to owner Chuck Delacerda, The Austin serves dinner six days a week, with a menu of steaks and burgers, and has happy hours Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday.

The Edmonds City Council is seeking applicants interested in serving on the city’s Economic Development Commission. Interested individuals may apply at the city’s website, pick up an application at the reception desk in the lobby of City Hall or call 425-771-0247 to receive an application by mail or email. Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 12.
