Sherwood Elementary students join marathon
Sherwood Elementary School in Edmonds had 55 runners who participated in the Seattle Marathon kids race on Nov. 24.
The Sherwood team won a trophy for being the team with the largest increase in participants: 7 to 55 in one year. The school sported the largest team at the race, too.
Each student logged 25 miles of running on his or her own before the 1.2 miles each ran on race day, said teacher Pamela Thain.
To be able to participate on the team the students also had to read 13 books each and perform 13 good deeds, which included picking up litter around their neighborhoods and helping elderly people in grocery stores.
“It has been a pleasure to coach such an awesome group of kids,” Thain said.
Glacier Peak Gridiron Club gets donation
The Glacier Peak High School Grizzly Gridiron Club received a $3,140 check from the Harris Ford Lincoln dealership Nov. 2 during the school’s playoff game against Seattle Preparatory School.
The money, which will go to supporting Glacier Peak’s football program, was raised during a fall “Drive Smart For Your School” event, in which Harris Ford Lincoln contributed $20 for each qualifying test-drive of a new Lincoln vehicle.
Machinists donate to Guide Dogs of America
Machinists Union District Lodge 751 raised nearly $299,000 for Guide Dogs of America in 2012.
That’s a record one-year fundraising total for District 751, which is Guide Dogs of America’s top fundraiser across North America.
The union raised the money through voluntary payroll deductions and through community fundraisers that included a fun run and car show in Everett, and a poker tournament and motorcycle poker run in Marysville. The union also put on a benefit golf tournament, drag-racing event, horseshoes tournament and prize drawings.
Over the past four years, District 751 has raised more than $1 million for Guide Dogs of America. The organization used that money to breed, raise and train 24 guide dogs, to be paired with people who are blind or have impaired vision.
Originally formed in 1935 to represent hourly workers at the Boeing Co., District Lodge 751 of the International Association of Machinists &Aerospace Workers now represents more than 33,000 working men and women at 48 employers across Washington, Oregon and California. In 2011, members of the Machinists Volunteer Program, the union’s community service arm, gave more than 10,000 hours of service to their communities.
Glacier Peak sophomore earns rank of Eagle Scout
Zackary “Zac” Nowlan, 15, the son of Drayson and Birgitte Nowlan of Marysville, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. His accomplishment was celebrated in a Court of Honor on Nov. 18 at Zion Lutheran School in Lake Stevens. Zak is a member of Troop 148, sponsored by the Tualco Grange of Monroe. He is the first Eagle Scout for Troop 148, which is led by Scoutmaster Mark Hallerman.
Zak is a sophomore at Glacier Peak High School. He plays guitar, fishes, hikes, enjoys basketball, reading, movies and boating.
For his Eagle project, Zak organized and oversaw the building and completion of an outdoor amphitheater at Zion Lutheran School. His goal and the school’s intent is that this space be used as outdoor seating for both school and church events.
