MOUNT VERNON — Stanwood overcame a second-half scoring explosion by Mount Vernon sophomore Allison Marken and rode a third-quarter scoring run to win the nonleague game.
Despite leading by as much as six points late in the fourth quarter, Stanwood had to sweat it out late as a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Alyssa Evans just bounced off the rim to secure the win.
Marken scored all 17 of her points in the second half, including the first three buckets in the fourth quarter to close the Stanwood lead to 37-35. But the Spartans locked down on defense and a pair of big baskets by junior Sierra Palmer opened up the lead to six points again.
Poor free throw shooting — Stanwood shot 4-for-10 from the line down the stretch — allowed the Bulldogs to remain in the game.
Stanwood, which is still playing without its lone senior Rachel Swartz, was led in scoring by Lauren Allison’s 10 points.
