Prep boys swimming: Shorewood 116, Cascade 54

MILL CREEK — Despite a rush to get out of the pool, Shorewood checked the 200-freestyle relay off of its list for state qualifying and dispatched Wesco 4A Cascade 116-54 in a nonleague meet.

The 2:30 p.m. meet had to be finished by 4 p.m., according to Shorewood head coach Scott Kelley. The Thunderbirds coach said he decided to swim some of his athletes three times instead of four in an effort to produce better times in the shortened format.

It worked well enough to achieve part of the Thunderbirds’ early season goal of qualifying teams for state in all three relays.

“The guys pulled it out (in the 200 freestyle relay). They qualified by half a second. We have that one checked off for the year,” Kelley said

As for individual performances, Kelley was impressed with Adam Hill.

“(Hill) really came on at the end of last year. He’s picking up right where he left off. … (Today) he swam times that were right where he was at the end of last year when he was all rested. That is good to see,” said Kelley.

Next on the list is qualifying a 400-freestyle relay team, then getting started on qualifying individuals, as well as experimenting to figure out the ideal lineup, said Kelley.

Shorewood swims against Kamiak next Thursday.

“That will probably be our first big challenge of the year,” said Kelley.

For Cascade, AJ Jenkins swam 4A state qualifying time of 53.92.
