ARLINGTON — Eagles sophomore guard Jessica Ludwig scored 11 points off the bench to pace Arlington to a 38-33 win over Monroe in a Wesco 4A North opener for both schools on Friday night.
Ludwig shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line on the night, including several key makes that swung the momentum the Eagles way late in the defensive battle.
“The defenses on both sides were excellent tonight,” said Arlington head coach Joe Marsh. “Monroe is the type of team that hangs their hat on their defense.”
Coach Marsh added that there were several keys to his team’s first league win of the season.
“Ashley (Alexander) is a great athlete, and Tiffany Ohlsen is a tough defender that we had to keep in check,” added Marsh. “But for us the main difference was hitting those free throws in the fourth quarter.”
The Eagles would make 11 of their free-throws in the games final eight minutes, and would hold Alexander and Ohlsen to five and six points, respectively.
Adding to Ludwig’s play off the bench, Lindsay Brown would score seven points — all coming from the free-throw line — to go along with her 10 rebounds.
