Candidates and independent groups spent almost $19 per vote in 1st Legislative District

The six candidates for three positions in the 1st Legislative District and outside groups spent almost $19 for every vote cast in the district in the November election.

The six candidates reported spending $539,457 on their campaigns, and independent organizations spent another $723,570 either supporting or opposing the candidates.

That's $18.75 for each of the 67,358 votes cast in the contest that drew the most votes.

The total doesn't include the $52,685 that Democrat Guy Palumbo spent in an unsuccessful primary bid against incumbent Democratic State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe and Republican challenger Dawn McCravey. McAuliffe defeated McCravey by a 55 percent to 45 percent margin after McAuliffe raised $195,226 and spent $173,467 with supporting independent expenditures of $178,226 and opposing independent expenditures of $335,716. McCravey raised $247,635 and spent $222,881 with supporting independent expenditures of $2,991 and opposing independent expenditures of $173,906.
