Edmonds schools receive art grants
Many art projects in Edmonds School District classrooms begin with the award of a Visual Arts Idea Grant from the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation.
Teachers in the fall are invited to apply for financial assistance for visual arts-related projects and curriculum-based programming. Of the 34 applications presented for a 2012-13 arts education grant, 27 proposals were funded.
For this school year, grants totaling $14,040 funded art opportunities for students in the district.
The following educators recently received an arts education grant from the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation.

Marysville man earns high school diploma
Preston Dwoskin, a 21-year-old Marysville resident, received his high school diploma during the Nov. 19 Marysville School Board meeting.
Dwoskin, who has a hearing disability, volunteers his time to advocate for people with disabilities. He thanked his teachers and the school district for helping him earn his diploma.
Granite Falls student to go to state concert
Granite Falls Middle School student Makenna Carter has been selected to participate in the 2013 Washington Music Educators Association’s concert Feb. 16 in Vancouver.
Makenna, who is in the eighth grade, will join other students from across the state to perform under the direction of music educators. All students were selected through an audition process. Makenna will play the flute with the band.
Student of the month named at Kamiak
Tori Niewohner, a senior at Kamiak High School, was named Kamiak High School October Student of the Month by the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club. She was nominated for the award by her teachers and academic counselors.
Tori is involved in many things at Kamiak including Pre-Med Club, National Honor Society and as a director at Dramafest. She has been involved in the drama program all four years at Kamiak. In the classroom, she has maintained a 3.93 grade-point average.
After graduation, Tori plans to attend Washington State University. She was nominated for the Regents Scholar and hopes to get a degree in zoology and attend graduate school to become a veterinarian. She ultimately would like to rehabilitate wildlife as a career.
Glacier Peak gets check from car dealer
Members of the Glacier Peak High School Grizzly Gridiron Club accepted a $3,140 check on Nov. 2 from Harris Ford Lincoln during the school’s playoff game against Seattle Preparatory School.
The money to support Glacier Peak’s football program was raised during a fall “Drive Smart for Your School” event in which Harris Ford Lincoln contributed $20 for each qualifying test-drive of a new Lincoln vehicle.
