INDEX -- Detectives are getting closer to finishing their investigation into a fatal hit-and-run accident in Index in August.

Stacey Lain Broyles, 47, of Index, and his dog were struck by a vehicle Aug. 4 while they were walking along Index-Galena Road, near Fifth Street. Both died from their injuries.

Three days after the accident, an Everett woman, 49, contacted police and identified herself as the driver, Snohomish County sheriff's spokeswoman Shari Ireton said Wednesday.

Evidence from the woman's vehicle was sent to the state crime lab, Ireton said. Laboratory tests results recently came back verifying that the same vehicle struck Broyles.

Once completed, the investigation's findings will be forwarded to prosecutors for a charging decision.
