Wintertide, a free community celebration to ring in the season, is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Everett Performing Arts Center Plaza, 2710 Wetmore Ave., in downtown Everett.
For the first two hours, the event features children’s holiday craft projects and face painting, a memories photo booth and free hot apple cider, cocoa and cookies. Santa is scheduled to arrive at 6 p.m. At the same time, there will be a tree lighting and caroling as well as a bonfire in the plaza.
There will also be a special showing at 6:30 p.m. of the 1966 animated classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
People can drop off new, unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

Picturing high tides: The state Department of Ecology is asking the public to send photos of unusually high tides, or “king” tides, that are predicted for the coming week.
For inland waterways, king tides are predicted for Sunday through Wednesday and Jan. 14-17.
The high tides are expected to hit the Washington coast from Wednesday through Saturday, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca on Wednesday through Friday.
Ecology officials suggest taking photos where the high water levels can be gauged against familiar landmarks such as sea walls, jetties, bridge supports or buildings. Keep a safe distance from rising water levels.
Note the date, time and location for each photo and upload the images on the Washington King Tide Photo Initiative Flickr Group at http://tinyurl.com/KingTidePhotos.
Also, send them to the Heraldnet reader galleries at www.heraldnet.com/yourphotos.
