Arlington: Make a gingerbread house

Arlington Library is scheduled to host a “Build It, Eat It: Mini-Gingerbread Houses” at 1 p.m. Saturday at 135 N. Washington Ave.

Families with children are especially encouraged to attend. The event is supported by the Friends of the Arlington Library.

Police plan next citizens academy

Arlington Police Department hosts its annual Citizens Academy Jan. 16-March 20.

The program aims to give the public a better understanding of police work and strengthen community partnerships.

Classes will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays in Council Chambers, 110 E. Third St., Arlington. The curriculum includes an overview of the police department, enhanced 911 system, crime scene investigation, drug enforcement, recruitment and training, use of force, the school resource program, and other agencies involved with the department.

The program is free but attendees should be at least 18 years old and commit to all 10 sessions. A background check also will be required. Pick up an application at the Arlington Police Department, 238 N. Olympic Ave., or print one online at www.arlingtonwa.gov. Applications are due Jan. 11.

Everett: Emergency assistance grants

Nonprofit and government organizations in Snohomish County have until Friday to apply for a federal grant program providing emergency food, shelter and rent or mortgage assistance. The grant money is awarded annually to Snohomish County by the National Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

Applications, with copies, should be submitted to Dillion by 4:30 p.m. Friday at 3301 Broadway, Everett, WA 98201.

Monroe: Christmas concert to benefit resource center

The Monroe Concert band is doing a concert to benefit Take the Next Step, a local nonprofit that helps homeless and low income families from the Skykomish River Valley.

The concert is schedule at 7 p.m., Dec. 20, Wagner Performing Arts center, 639 W. Main St. in Monroe.

Entrance is free, but donations are encouraged. The center is looking for non-perishable food, hygiene products, gloves, diapers and baby wipes.

Lynnwood: Firefighters retire

A ceremony is planned Monday in the Martha Lake area for two retiring firefighters.

The ceremony at 9 a.m. at Martha Lake Fire Station 21, 16819 13th Ave. W., Lynnwood, will honor firefighters Gary Hood and Mike Tipp.

Hood is retiring after 19 years, Tipp after 21.

Parking will be available in the north and east lots of Christ the Rock Church.

Snohomish: Apply for honors program

Parents interested in registering their children in the advanced programs at the elementary and middle school level can pick up registration packages starting today at any district elementary or middle school, or at the Resource Service Center, 1601 Ave. D. The packets can also be downloaded from the district’s website at www.sno.wednet.edu. Packets are due on Jan. 25.

Luminaries to light up Snohomish River

People are invited to walk the Snohomish Riverside Trail between 4 and 7 p.m. Dec. 21 for the seventh Candlelight Solstice Walk.

The free event celebrates the longest night of the year with white paper bags luminaries alongside the trail. The trail is located between Avenue D and Cady Landing in historic downtown Snohomish.

Library hosts family comedy show

Comedian Alex Zerbe is scheduled to perform his family show at 11 a.m. Dec. 22 at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave. The free show is sponsored by the Sno-Isle Foundation and the Friends of the Snohomish Library.

Sultan: Go caroling with neighbors

People are invited to participate in the third annual community Christmas caroling from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, starting at the Visitor Information Center, 320 Main St. People are encouraged to bring warm clothes and a flashlight. Song books, beverages and cookies will be provided.
