New stone wall needs support

Sign up for Weekend to-do list
Question: Can I cover a large wall with heavy natural stone?

Answer: If you have a wood floor you should build a concrete foundation beneath it (in the crawl space or basement) to support the weight.

The stone would be laid directly onto the foundation and the wall would be built up through the floor and then up the face of the wall.

If you have a concrete floor, you may have to strengthen the slab.

Contact a structural engineer. There's much more to the project than applying the stone to the wall.
