Snohomish: Interim fire chief named

Snohomish Deputy Fire Chief Ron Simmons has been named as interim fire chief for the foreseeable future.

Longtime Fire Chief Mark Collins plans to retire before the end of the month after more than 30 years with the department.

The board of commissioners recently appointed Simmons to fill the spot for now.

The board eventually could appoint Simmons permanently or hire a new chief. There's no timeline for that decision.

Snohomish County: DNR workers honored for Reiter Foothills

A group of 19 state Department of Natural Resources employees were honored recently for their leadership in completing the initial segment of off-road vehicle trails at Reiter Foothills Forest this summer.

The state began construction of the initial section --1.4 miles of single-track motorcycle trail -- in mid-June and completed it by the Aug. 1 goal date.

Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark praised the department's employees for enlisting members of the off-road vehicle, hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian communities in planning and building the project's first phase.

Those honored are Lisa Anderson, Dennis Brown, Jim Cahill, Daniel Christian, Drake Harkness, Tony Holt, Ken Holz, Sue Jenson, Diana Lofflin, Mark Mauren, Al McGuire, Scott Minkler, Jim Patton, Luis Prado, Chris Robertson, Kirk Thomas, Jamie Turner, David Way and Ron Whitehall.

Reiter Foothills Forest is a block of DNR-managed, forested state trust land about 30 miles east of Everett.

Tribes and other agencies work to protect streams and habitat by planning and developing sustainable motorized and nonmotorized trails.
