Front Porch: Decorate your car for the holidays

Historic Downtown Snohomish is organizing an event from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday to get people to decorate their cars, trucks and other street-legal vehicles with Christmas lights and drive in a loop downtown.

The idea has been tried in other communities where people decorate their cars and trucks with battery-powered Christmas lights. The group is asking people to drive in a loop on First Street, Avenue D, Second Street and Union Avenue. Traffic will flow clockwise -- keep turning right. People can either drive once or twice or drive the entire hour.

Teen video Challenge: Washington is taking part in the 2013 Teen Video Challenge, a national competition with the aim of getting teens involved with reading and their library's summer reading program.

The project, sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, encourages youth from across the country to create 30- to 90-second videos with their interpretation of the theme, "Beneath the Surface," to promote reading and libraries.

Cash awards will be given to the winner or winners of each state, as well as their favorite public library. Winners will be announced in the spring.

The program is a consortium of states working to provide children, teens, and families with a summer reading program and promotional materials for public libraries.
