Mill Creek: Exiting fire authority talks

The Mill Creek City Council voted earlier this month to exit the talks about forming a regional fire authority in south Snohomish County.

Almost all the cities and fire districts between Everett and the Snohomish-King county line have been meeting to talk about the idea since early 2011.

There’s no timeline for when they might put something on the ballot.

If approved by voters, a fire authority would regionalize fire protection services into one large agency spanning south county.

No other involved agencies have expressed an interest in leaving the talks, officials said.

Mill Creek contracts for fire protection service with Snohomish County Fire District 7, based in Clearview.

The current contract runs through 2016.

Mountlake Terrace: Citizenship classes

The Mountlake Terrace Library starts its next series of free citizenship classes on Jan. 3.

More than 20 people have become U.S. citizens since the library started the program.

The five sessions will be held at 7 p.m. Thursdays.

Registration is required; call 425-775-8722 or register at the library, located at 23300 58th Ave. W.

The Edmonds Library also offers citizenship classes, held at 1 p.m. Mondays starting Jan. 7. To register, call 425-771-1933 or visit the library at 650 Main St.

Classes help prospective citizens prepare for the U.S. Citizenship Test.

Stanwood: Second councilman resigns

City Councilman Roger Haskin has resigned from the Stanwood City Council to pursue other opportunities, said Mayor Dianne White.

Haskin previously served on the city Planning Commission and was appointed to serve on the council before being elected in November 2011.

Haskin’s departure is the second resignation from the City Council this year.

Larry Sather, a former city planning commissioner, was appointed in September to the council after the resignation of Jenna Friebel, a hydrologist, who also was elected in November 2011.

For information about the process of being appointed to serve in Haskin’s council seat, call 360-629-2181.
