Despite earning the moniker “frankenfish,” genetically modified salmon that grow twice as fast as normal salmon have been declared as safe to eat by the Food and Drug Administration. The modified fish uses extra growth hormone from chinook salmon and a gene from an eel-like fish to keep it growing.
If this is successful, the company developing the salmon said it may cross a sockeye with an alder tree to get a fish that smokes itself.
