Coast Guard relieves captain of Seattle cutter

SEATTLE -- The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that the captain of the Seattle-based cutter Mellon has been relieved of his post.
Chief Warrant Officer Allyson Conroy told The Seattle Times that Capt. Daniel McLaughlin's discharge was not the result of any specific incident. McLaughlin took command of the Mellon in July 2011.
A Coast Guard press release said McLaughlin was removed on Dec. 21 "due to loss of confidence in his ability to command," and has been reassigned to the Coast Guard's 13th District headquarters in Seattle.
The Mellon, a 378-foot Hamilton-class vessel, patrols waters between the Bering Sea and South America for rescue, defense operations, law enforcement and environmental protection.
