Ideas for weekend fun: New Year’s, hikes, Silvertips

Happy weekend! This week, we’re extending our ideas for weekend fun through New Year’s Day. Take a look, we’ve got plenty of options for the whole family.

Make your mark: You can add your creative touch and a family heirloom to the mosaic wall going up at Everett plaza. Artist Linda Beaumont is leading a free mosaic workshop for the community from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday in the Anderson Room at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett. The event is suitable for adults and all children 8 years old and older. All materials will be provided. You are also welcome to bring a special memento or family treasure to place in your mosaic. Objects can include broken plates, a favorite teacup or metal keepsake, a string of pearls, an old ring, a button, old jewelry and brooches and other small treasures. Don’t bring paper, plastic, fabric or cloth. No organic materials. For more information, call Carol Thomas at the city of Everett at 425 257-7101.

Ring in the New Year: There’s tons of stuff going on for New Year’s Eve. If bowling or skating is your thing, check out some ideas here. If you’d prefer a party with music, dancing and costumes, check out some ideas here.

New Year’s Eve just for kids: On New Year’s Eve, Imagine Children’s Museum in Everett will celebrate from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a ball drop, magician, crafts and much more. Also, the museum is normally closed on Mondays, but will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The New Year’s Eve evening event requires a ticket. They are cheaper if you buy them in advance. Find out more here.

Boom! Start 2013 with a bang at the Space Needle. The annual fireworks kick off just before midnight. There’s plenty going on at Seattle Center beforehand if you want to join the party. Or you could catch the show from one of many vantage points around the city, such as Gas Works Park.

Go for a hike: Kick off 2013 right with a hike. Four guided hikes are planned in state parks in our area. The hikes are all easy or moderate and start in the late morning or early afternoon. Find all the details here.

Enjoy a great meal: We found a delectable and diverse selection of restaurants in Snohomish County in 2012, offering everything from great cheese to divine chocolate, succulent filet mignon to fabulous fish. Click here to see our favorites.

See the lights: It’s the last weekend to see holiday lights at several spots. • The Lights of Christmas in Stanwood. Last day is Saturday. Find details here. • Marysville’s Holiday Tour of Lights. Last day is Saturday. Find details here. • Woodland Park Zoo’s Wildlights. Last day is Tuesday. Find details here.

Watch the game: The Seahawks’ final regular season home game is on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:25 p.m. You can catch the game on TV on Fox.

See the Tips: After a long time, the Silvertips are back in town. They face the Thunderbirds at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Comcast. Keep up with the Tips in our blog here. To buy tickets, go here.
