KENT — The Everett Silvertips got the second half of their season off to a winning note.
Everett received a strong performance from goaltender Austin Lotz, and the Tips opened their second-half account by defeating the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Friday night.
Lotz made 38 saves, including several spectacular stops, as Everett tasted victory following its 11-day holiday break. The victory was Everett’s first against Seattle this season in five tries.
Carson Stadnyk and Kohl Bauml scored the goals and Ryan Harrison had two assists for Everett (14-22-0-2).
Alexander Delnov scored for Seattle (16-18-1-1), which dropped its sixth straight. Brandon Glover made 28 saves in net for the T-birds.
The same two teams square off again tonight in Everett.
Seattle opened the scoring 7 minutes, 34 seconds into the game. Connor Honey sent a nice feed out front from the corner, and Delnov put a backhander over Lotz to give the T-birds a 1-0 lead. Glover kept it 1-0 late in the period when he made a good point-blank save on Joshua Winquist.
Everett tied it up 4:56 into the second period. The Tips kept the T-birds pinned, and Nick Walters’ shot through traffic deflected off Stadnyk and in to knot it at 1-1.
Later in the second period the Tips killed off a five-on-three power play, and Lotz made a spectacular stop on Seth Swenson late in the period as it remained 1-1 going into the third.
Everett then took the lead with 9:07 remaining. Harrison’s centering feed from below the goal line somehow made it through to the far post, where Bauml tapped it in to give the Tips the lead.
After that it was Lotz who preserved the victory. First he denied Justin Hickman on a two-on-one, then made a pair of big saves immediately following an Everett scoring chance at the other end.
