Snohomish girls big down the stretch in win over Issaquah
Panthers outscore Eagles 13-2 in game's final three minutes, win 54-48 in Snohomish Christmas Invitational game
"Ellie did a great job of coming off the bench cold and hitting a big shot," said Snohomish head coach Ken Roberts.
Snohomish outscored Issaquah 21-10 in the fourth quarter to come from behind and grab the win in a game that featured the two teams that were 2-0 after the first two days of the holiday invitational. Callie Harwood led all scorers with 22 points, including a stretch between the third and fourth quarters in which the Panthers forward scored 12 of Snohomish's 14 points to give Snohomish its first lead of the game with 6:30 to go in the game.
Issaquah would get a pair of big baskets from Mackenzie Wieburg to build its lead back to 46-41, but Snohomish outscored the Eagles 13-2 in the game's final three minutes to grab the win.
The Panthers needed a big run in the final period because of a hole they put themselves in early on. Coming out in a man-to-man defense, Snohomish fell behind 11-0 as Issaquah hit four of their first five shots of the game.
"They're a very athletic team and they're a tough team to matchup against because they have a number of players who can score," Roberts said of Issaquah, who got 17 points each from Wieburg and Mandie Hill.
Roberts subbed in freshman Shaylee Harwood and switched to a triangle-and-2 and a 1-2 chaser defense that allowed his team to focus on shutting down the Eagles' top players and it worked. Snohomish scored the final four points of the first quarter and outscored Issaquah 15-11 in the second period behind seven points from freshman Madeline Smith to draw to within three points and halftime.
"I think we were too tentative early," Roberts said. "Shaylee came in off the bench and really made things happen and was aggressive and that changed things for us."
