KELOWNA, B.C. — It’s been a long weekend for the Everett Silvertips, and Sunday evening they ran out of gas.
Playing their third game in three nights, and playing against a formidable opponent, the Silvertips succumbed 5-1 to the Kelowna Rockets.
Myles Bell scored twice as Kelowna (26-10-1-1) won it’s 14th straight home game. Dylen McKinlay, Cole Linaker and Colton Sissons also scored for the Rockets, while Jordon Cooke made 18 saves in net.
Kohl Bauml scored the lone goal for Everett (15-23-0-2), which struggled mightily on the power play. The Tips went 0 for 6 with the advantage and allowed a short-handed goal. Everett hasn’t scored on the power play in four games, and the Tips haven’t converted in their past 18 chances.
Daniel Cotton finished with 28 saves in goal for the Tips. Everett overage winger and Kelowna native Ryan Harrison played in his 300th career WHL game. He had an assist on Everett’s goal.
Kelowna scored first at 7 minutes, 15 seconds of the first period. Ryan Olsen fed Bell all alone in front, and Bell scored past Cotton to make it 1-0.
Everett tied it on a great passing move in transition, Harrison and Landon Oslanski combining to set up Bauml to make it 1-1 at 15:14.
But Kelowna received a five-on-three power play late in the period and converted on Bell’s one-timer at 18:06 to regain the lead.
Everett received power plays in the second period, but it was Kelowna that took advantage as McKinlay converted a short-handed breakaway at 9:13 to make it 3-1.
The Rockets sealed it in the third period. Linaker put a shot into the top corner from a tight angle at 2:25 for his first career goal, then Sissons scored off a face-off win at 6:51.
