Volunteer: Help with MLK Day projects
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 21, teens will fan out for a day of service organized through the United Way's Youth United program.
Teens ages 14-19 can sign up for a project in advance at www.uwsc.org/mlkday.php, 425-374-5526 or youthunited@uwsc.org.
Senior citizens are encouraged to sign up through the local Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to partner with teen volunteers.
Service projects include routine household chores for elderly or disabled clients or work on projects like painting at a local senior center.
RSVP aims to help adult and teen volunteers learn about each other and help someone else at the same time.
Project hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and work locations are all over Snohomish County. Adult volunteers are not expected to give rides to the teen volunteers.
A one-hour training for senior volunteers is set for 4:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the United Way, 3120 McDougall Ave., Everett, in Suite 200.

Donate: Lions collect glasses at Tips games
Members of Everett Lions clubs plan to collect used eyeglasses at Friday's Silvertips hockey game as part of the Lions Score for Sight campaign.
The Lions each year send thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses to the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in Lacey for sorting and grading. The glasses are given to people around the world who can't afford them.
Monetary donations also will be accepted. The Silvertips play at Comcast Arena, 2000 Hewitt Ave.

Recycle: Time to take down the tree
Don't want to hack up the tree into small bits for the yard-waste bin?
Most local Boy Scout troops will pick up Christmas trees curb side Saturday as part of an annual fundraiser.
Others have drop-off locations. To find your local troop's pick-up schedule, visit the interactive map at http://dryneedles.com, or call 425-338-0380.
The suggested donation is typically $10 and helps cover activities like leadership training and camping trips.
Everett Community College offers free recycling for those who drop off their tree between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays, Wednesday through Jan. 30.
The college is at 2000 Tower St.
In every case, trees should be free of decorations, including tinsel. Flocked trees (trees decorated with artificial snow) will not be accepted.
