MONROE — Monroe’s Deidra Miller scored 17 points and the Bearcats defense held the high-scoring Royals to zero made 3-pointers as the Bearcats knocked the Royals from the ranks of the unbeaten on Wednesday night.
“Deidra Miller really brought it tonight,” said Monroe head coach Matt Chalfant. “We took advantage of our size tonight and went inside out. She finished really well, really crashed the board and as really an animal inside.”
Coming into Wednesday night’s game, Lynnwood led all of Wesco in scoring, averaging almost 63 points per game. But Monroe managed to cut off the Royals usual methods of attack.
“It was big one holding Lynnwood to zero threes (0-for-8). We knew they love to drive-and-kick and we focused on that in practice,” said Chalfant. “We (also) preached all week about transition, getting back in transition to jam the ball and slow it up.”
Jordyn Edwards led Lynnwood with 14 points and was one of the few Royals that could consistantly create against the Monroe defense.
“They got most of their points off the dribble drive and Jordyn Edwards did a great job…she hurt us off the bounce,” said Chalfant.
Trailing by four points entering the fourth quarter, Monroe outscored Lynnwood by eight in the final period. Jordyn Turner made two free-throws with 11 seconds left to seal the game for the Bearcats.
“Going into the fourth quarter (down by four), I said this is exactly what we wanted,” said Chalfant. “The girls just stepped up.”
