Burn ban lifted

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency is lifting the Stage 1 air quality burn bans for Snohomish and Pierce counties.

The burn ban was put into effect on Saturday when the weather turned dry and cold, creating more stagnant conditions. Air pollution was expected to build up to levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in communities where wood-burning stoves are common.

Weather forecasters expect winds to pick up this evening to help disperse air pollution that has built up over the past few days.

Antarctic expedition revisited: Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen led the Antarctic expedition that discovered the South Pole more than a century ago.

And his journey continues to inspire.

Now three prominent Norwegian artists used the journey to create a new exhibition, The Impression of Amundsen: Roald Amundsen's South Pole Expedition 1910–1912, opening Jan. 18 at the Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 Northwest 67th St., Seattle.

Amundsen's personal diary from the South Pole expedition of 1910–12 was published for the first time in 2010, shedding new light on the historic expedition. His diary also provided the inspiration for paintings and graphic works from the Norwegian artists Tore Hansen, Ulf Nilsen, and Håvard Vikhagen.

The artists were invited by the Fram Museum in Oslo and Norwegian publishing company ART PRO AS to read Amundsen's diary and create artworks based on the reading.

The exhibition runs through March 3. Learn more on the Nordic Heritage Museum website at www.nordicmuseum.org/exhibitions.aspx#Amundsen.
