EVERETT — With his team clinging to a two-point lead over Wesco 4A South rival Mariner and one match left to decide the winner, Cascade coach Brooklyn Obregon glanced over at Bruins assistant Mike Wilson and both gave a confident nod.
They had total confidence in Wyatt Larsen.
The result showed why. Larsen beat Mariner’s Roman Ozuna by a technical fall 15-0 to lead the Bruins to a 37-30 win over the Marauders in the first league match for both teams Thursday night at Mariner H.S.
“Coach Wilson and I both had a feeling of security with Wyatt going out there,” Obregon said. “He handles stress really well; he thrives under it. One thing we knew if it was up to him he’d get it done.”
Cascade came into the match hobbled with three wrestlers, including Gino Obregon, sick and unavailable. But the Bruins got pins from Jorge Escobedo and Sam Calabrese and wins by David Gutierrez, Juan Garcia and Darrick Rongholt to secure the win.
The win by Rongholt was extra special. The Bruins 138-pounder beat Mariner’s David Bui 12-11 in a back-and-forth, triple-overtime victory that could have gone either way.
“Both guys fought their tales off,” Obregon said. “Bui is no slouch, he’s a good wrestler.”
For Mariner, freshman Ulices Favela pinned Cascade Roscoe North in the first round and Edgars Plorinsh came from behind to pin Kellen Polk at 170 pounds.
