ROCKPORT — The Skagit Eagle Festival began Saturday and continues for each weekend in January.
But visitors hoping to see eagles along the Skagit River near Rockport should go sooner rather than later.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports the number of eagles peaked at more than 260 in late December and dropped to about 150 last week.
An eagle watch coordinator, Tanya Kitterman, said the chum salmon run took place early this year and was smaller than expected on the Skagit River. With fewer carcasses, to eat the eagles are moving on to look for more food elsewhere.
