Dear fellow Herald Prep podcasters Aarons Lommers and Swaney –
Hey guys! What’s up? It’s your buddy David. You know, the guy who covers a lot of Wesco North games and is always trying to reiterate to you guys how good the teams in that conference are.
I just wanted to write to make sure you guys saw the final result of that Stanwood, Glacier Peak boys basketball game I covered tonight.
Just in case you missed it, it was Stanwood 55, Glacier Peak 54.
That’s right! The Wesco North team won! “OHMYGOSH! But how did this happen,” Aaron Lommers is frantically asking himself.
Well, I’ll tell you. Stanwood is good. The Wesco North is good. PLEASE START LISTENING TO ME!!!!!!
Jackson’s an amazing team that’s likely not going to relinquish the No. 1 spot in our poll anytime soon. That’s fine. I’ll give you that one. But there are two teams in the top six I want to draw your attention to.
Spoiler alert: they’re in the Wesco North.
Stanwood and Arlington.
These are two good teams fellas. There are lots of good teams in our area. We’re very lucky. It doesn’t matter if you go north, south, east or west.
But I’ve seen the Eagles play and come from behind to beat Stanwood in a thriller. And just this evening I saw the Spartans, the No. 6 team in the power poll, beat the No. 2 team Glacier Peak.
The Spartans are a very deep team. They have Cannen Roberson, who is third in Wesco 3A averaging 16.7 points per game. Josh Thayer adds another 11.3 per game.
They have two posts that are both named Drew and both 6-feet-8 or taller: Drew Sears and Drew Stang. Yeah. Talk about a matchup nightmare. Let’s put aside the fact that my 5-foot-8 self is jealous as hell of them, but even if a team has one taller post, like Glacier Peak’s Zach Pederson, odds are they don’t have two starters over 6-8, and may not have anyone that stands as tall as Sears at 6-foot-10.
On top of all that there’s Stanwood’s sixth man Ian Zipp. All he did Tuesday night was come into the game and hit the game-winning free throws for the Spartans.
Aaron Lommers likes to praise the Wesco South, and I don’t mean to take anything away from those teams. Glacier Peak, Mountlake Terrace, Shorewood, Jackson, Edmonds-Woodway they’re all great teams.
The Grizzlies have the Wesco 3A leading scorer in Pederson, and another sharp shooter in Ramsey Rosales. They’re a great team and I expect them to do very well in the postseason.
And I think we agree that Jackson is the favorite to be the 4A District 1 championship come playoff time, ensuring the Wesco South has at least one district champion.
It is this writer’s postulation (check out that big word Aarons! I can feel your pride from here) that the 3A District 1 champ will come from the North.
So, in summation, goodnight and just remember #theNorthisrising .
Sincerely,
David
