Prep boys basketball: Kamiak 74, Lake Stevens 64

MUKILTEO -- Lake Stevens charged in the third quarter to get within one, but near perfect free throw shooting the rest of the way by Kamiak got the Knights the Wesco 4A crossover win.
Fouls and free throws decided this game and the numbers show it. Lake Stevens committed 22 fouls to Kamiak's 12. Kamiak was 23-for-28 from the free-throw line, 14-for-16 in the fourth quarter. Those 14 points equaled the Vikings entire fourth quarter score.
Still, Lake Stevens didn't go down easily, and for a while they were threatening to pull off the upset.
"They came out way more aggressive (after halftime)," said Kamiak head coach Cory West. "They wanted it more."
The Vikings forced 21 turnovers in the game, 12 of which came in the second half and the bulk came in the third quarter.
At one point, the Vikings forced three turnovers in a row, according to West. Then Devin Stoen hit a deep 2-point shot at the buzzer to make the score 51-50.
"They were putting a little more pressure on us. ... Our shots were not falling as well in the second half," West said. "My guys grinded it out. It was a good win for us."
As to the free throw shooting, it is something the Knights have improved on.
"Before the Arlington game we were 56 percent from the free-throw line. I've been stressing it at practice. We need at least 75 percent. Last game we were 79 percent. I think also this game we were 79 percent," said West.
He was close. Kamiak shot 82 percent from the line.
