Lawyers: King County to pay $75K in deputy case

SEATTLE -- Lawyers for a Seattle man who accused a King County sheriff's deputy of breaking his nose say they have reached a $75,000 settlement with the county.
The county has already agreed to pay more than $10 million in a 2009 case involving Deputy Matthew Paul's conduct. In that case, a man named Christopher Harris was left brain-damaged after Paul delivered a hit to his chest, slamming him into a concrete wall.
Jeffrey Gold's lawyers announced their settlement Wednesday.
King County sheriff's spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West says Gold started photographing deputies addressing a group of young men in Seattle in May 2010 and did not stop when deputies told him to. West says Gold jaywalked in front of deputies as he left the area. Gold's lawyer Sim Osborn says Deputy Paul tackled Gold and pushed his face into the ground.
It's legal in Washington to capture images of police activity in public places as long as it doesn't interfere with officers' work. Osborn says Gold was arrested for obstruction of justice but never charged with a crime.
