Gov.-elect Jay Inslee today named Kevin Quigley, a onetime lawmaker and former president of Everett Shipyard, as his secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services.
Quigley, 51, of Lake Stevens, will be taking the reins of one of largest, complex and controversy-wracked departments in state government.
Each year its programs serve more than 2 million children, vulnerable adults, seniors and families. It runs the state foster care system and an array of disability services.
“I may never have a bigger opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives,” Quigley said today.
Quigley, whose wife Suzanne is a Lake Stevens City Councilmember, he served in the state Senate for one term, from 1993-97.
In 1996, the Democrat ran for Congress and lost to Republican Jack Metcalf. In 2003, he ran for Snohomish County Executive and lost to Aaron Reardon in the primary.
He was president of Everett Shipyard and remained with the boat building industry after the firm was acquired by Todd Shipyards and later Vigor Industrial. He left the firm in April.
Also today, Inslee announced the hiring of Dale Peinecke, president and chief executive officer of Giddens Industries in Everett, as the new director of the Employment Security Department. He has been active with the Workforce Development Council of Snohomish County.
