DOT calls in big guns for avalanche control on U.S. 2

  • Mark Mulligan / The Herald

Harlan Sheppard of the Washington State Department of Transportation sits on the turret of an M60 tank firing at a mountainside near the Stevens Pass summit Tuesday. WSDOT uses two surplus tanks for avalanche control along U.S. 2, bringing down snow while the highway is closed, usually late at night or early in the morning. Tuesday, WSDOT decided to work in the afternoon because of high avalanche risk. Click here to see more photos.
