Archbishop Murphy boys upset first-place King's
Wildcats hand Knights first conference loss and win at King's for first time since 2009
Zander Clouse, Conner Longoria and Josh Parafina each scored 12 points, with Brad Kwesele adding 11 and Phil Hoban chipping in with 10 to pace a hot-shooting Murphy. The Wildcats shot 21 for 33 from the field (64 percent), which helped overcome 24 turnovers and being outrebounded by seven.
"They were efficient, got good shots and made them," said King's assistant coach Christian Taylor, adding, "They played fast and had a lot of buckets in transition which hurt us."
Archbishop Murphy also managed to keep King's guard Caleb Taylor from going wild. Taylor, coming off a 40-point performance against Sultan on Tuesday, managed 22 points on 43-percent shooting and had seven steals. Andrew Ayers (11 points) and Daniel Fouty (10) were the other Knights' players in double figures.
Trailing by a point after the first quarter, Archbishop Murphy outscored the home team 17-11 in the second to take a five-point advantage into the half. The Knights' cut the deficit to two by the end of the third, but the Wildcats stretched the lead to 54-47 with three minutes left in the fourth and coasted for their for first victory at King's since 2009.
The win vaults Archbishop Murphy ahead of Sultan for third place in the Cascade Conference, while King's drops into a tie for first with Cedarcrest.
