787 flight cancellations pile up for ANA

Dreamliner launch customer All Nippon Airways has canceled flights that were scheduled to operate with Boeing 787s through Jan. 28, the airline said Monday.

As the largest operator of the 787, ANA has taken the biggest hit to operations since aviation authorities grounded Boeing's Dreamliner last week. ANA has 17 787s.

The Japanese carrier called off 787 flights beginning Jan. 16. From Jan. 16 through Jan. 28, ANA has scrapped 320 domestic flights, affecting 46,800 passengers. The airline also has canceled 51 international flights, affecting 4,500 passengers.

ANA said it would provide an update Thursday for 787 flights scheduled for Jan. 29 and later.

The investigation into what caused batteries aboard two different 787s to malfunction continues. The National Transportation Safety Board said on Sunday that excess battery voltage wasn't the cause of a Jan. 7 fire on a Japan Airlines 787. The NTSB also is assisting in the investigation into the Jan. 15 battery failure that forced an ANA 787 to make an emergency landing in Japan.
