BELLINGHAM — Bellingham police are looking for the car that hit a Western Washington University student, causing an injury that nearly cost her an arm.
The family of 18-year-old Mackenzie O’Brien of Edmonds is offering a $1,000 reward to catch the driver who struck her. She and a friend were hit from behind Friday night after they got off a bus.
The Bellingham Herald reported that the friend was treated and released at a hospital, but O’Brien suffered an artery injury that had doctors thinking about amputating her right arm.
Her father said she had to be driven to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle because it was too foggy for an airlift.
Her arm was saved by emergency surgery but she’ll have to take a break from college to recover.
