EVERETT — Imaan Vicente scored 32 points and Tyler Nielsen hit two critical 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Kamiak held off Mariner 61-59 in a Wesco 4A South contest.
Coming off a 34-point performance against Lynnwood on Friday, Vicente picked up right were he left off, scoring 22 of Kamiak’s 34 first-half points.
“He’s a good player,” said Mariner head coach Tom Jensen about Vicente. “He was making a lot of shots from outside, knocking down shots from the elbow range, he was on fire (in the first half).”
Thanks to Vicente, Kamiak had a seven-point lead at the half, but the Maruaders gradually chipped away at the deficit and took a one-point lead with three minutes left in the fourth quarter. However, Vicente made a basket and Nielsen followed with a 3-pointer that put the Knights back on top by four.
Mariner had a chance in the final minute when after scoring a basket to put the Maruaders down by one with 10.7 seconds left. After Mariner fouled to put Kamiak at the free throw line, Nielsen made one of two to make it a two-point game. But the Maruaders were not able to put up a final shot as the Knights’ Josh Wisnubroto stole the ball with three seconds left and dribbled out the remaining time.
“We made some adjustsments (on Vincente) at halftime, gave our guys a review of the gameplan,” said Jensen. “Colton Richardson and Cody Chrisman did a better job (defensively) in the second half, but Tyler Nielsen picked it up with two 3s in the fourth.”
Kiante Ahmad-Woods led the Maruaders with 24 points, who would’ve pulled into a tie for third place in the Wesco 4A South with a win. Instead, Kamiak is now tied with Edmonds-Woodway for second place.
