WHAT: A hybrid mahonia called Winter Sun is a tall evergreen shrub that makes a dramatic focal point in the winter garden. Large leaves develop in whorls along the branched stems and fragrant yellow flowers appear in late fall or early winter. The blooms develop into waxy clusters of black berries by late summer into autumn.

WHY PLANT IT? Winter Sun's gorgeous foliage and upright growth add beauty and drama to the winter garden. It's more compact and fragrant than related cultivars.

WHERE: It grows well in full sun to dappled shade and prefers well-drained soil, but will tolerate sandy sites and clay. Once established it is drought tolerant, although plants in full sun can yellow if it's too dry. Occasional watering during dry weather will help maintain its rich green color. Prune the tips of young plants in early spring to make a bushier specimen. Older plants need little pruning other than the removal of dead or broken limbs.

SIZE: A 10-year-old woody plant or a 5-year perennial or bulb will reach 7 feet in height and 4 feet in width.
