Grants available for community gardens

There is such a thing as a free lunch.
It starts with "seed money" from Snohomish County Master Gardener Foundation. The group has $6,000 to give out for the Community Garden Grant Program.
Grants are $500 to $1,000.
"The deadline is when I run out of money," spokesperson Sandy Delisle said. "But I can go back to the board and ask for more, and they can probably find it."
Recipients get a master gardener adviser as a mentor.
"We don't do the work," she said.
The grant can be used to buy tools, seeds, plants and materials to establish a new garden or support existing gardens. It can't be used for salaries or expenses not directly related to the garden project.
Past recipients include garden clubs, churches, food bank gardens, senior apartment gardens and elementary school projects.
Applicants need to have a plan, Delisle said.
