MONROE -- Behind Brandon Gundersen's 22 points and 11 rebounds and Nicota Stevenson's 20 points and three steals, Monroe defeated Snohomish 61-53 in a key Wesco 4A North matchup on Friday night.

According to Bearcat head coach Nick Wold, Gunderson's and Stevenson's leadership proved pivotal in the teams victory. A victory that Monroe needed to leap the Panthers in the North standings to better position themselves for a chance at a district berth.

"I think the second half was a telling story," said Wold. "Nicota's agression was fantastic in the third quarter. (He) did a good job at attacking the rim. Gunderson is one of those motor guys that's constantly hustling. Brandon did a wonderful job controlling the offensive glass. (He) is a tough matchup for (Snohomish). He is able to slash and cut. He shows a lot of leadership out on the floor and really thats why he was voted as a team captain as a junior."

Leadership being one of the focus points for the Monroe squad, Wold was sure to credit sophomore point guard Rhen Shore and junior Riley Schelfhout. Two players whose numbers in a box score may not stand out.

"(Rhen) Shore is our floor general," Wold said. "He's a sophomore point guard that does a great job at running the floor and finding the open guy. Riley has been one of our steady performers. He's turning into one of the most versatile players in Wesco."

Shore finished with seven assists and four steals, while Schelfhout grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
