ARLINGTON -- A pickup driver hit a small sports car head on while going the wrong way on Highway 530 on Sunday evening, leaving the other driver with potentially life-threatening injuries, the Washington State Patrol said.

The patrol is treating the crash as a case of driving under the influence and vehicular assault, Trooper Mark Francis said.

Witnesses told troopers the driver who caused the crash had been headed west in the eastbound lanes, but did not appear to be speeding, Francis said. The Chevrolet pickup she was driving hit a Mazda Miata traveling in the highway's eastbound lane near 59th Street NE.

Both drivers are women in their 50s from Arlington, Francis said. The Mazda driver was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with compound fractures and other serious injuries. The pickup driver was taken to Cascade Valley Hospital with several broken bones.

The crash blocked Highway 530 west of downtown Arlington, leading to lengthy detours.
