Mountlake Terrace girls upset Shorecrest for third straight win

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace might have been eliminated from postseason contention a couple of weeks ago, but that has not stopped the Hawks from being a thorn in the side of teams still jockeying for playoff seeding.

Nikkie Froehlich made two free throws with 5.5 seconds left as the Hawks edged Shorecrest 53-52 on Monday night. It was the third straight win and five out of the last seven for the Hawks, with four of those victories coming against playoff-bound teams.

“Now we’re figuring it out,” said Hawks head coach Dave Brophy. “Our competitive maturity keeps creeping up.”

Taylor Smith scored 13 points, with Samantha Romanowski and Maddy Kristjanson adding 12 apiece to provide the bulk of the Terrace offense.

The Hawks trailed by 10 at halftime, but outscored the Scots 22-11 in the third to take a one-point lead heading into the final period. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth tilt, with neither team leading by more than three. Brophy likened it to a “heavyweight fight. Both sides kept taking punches.”

But after a Scots turnover with 10 seconds left, Froehlich got fouled on a drive and made both at the line. Shorecrest then committed another turnover and the Hawks were able to run out the remaining time to win on senior night.

Onyie Chibuogwu scored 14 points for Shorecrest, but the Scots will rue their free shooting. Shorecrest shot just 12 for 27 at the charity stripe, compared to 12 of 17 for Terrace.
